Hotel Towel Quality Standards: What Every Buyer Should Know

Buying towels for a hotel isn't just about softness. This guide covers the key quality parameters — GSM, composition, construction and testing — that separate great towels from poor ones.

Hotel Towel Quality Standards: What Every Buyer Should Know

Purchasing towels for a hotel is a significant procurement decision. The wrong choice can result in poor guest reviews, high replacement costs and laundry inefficiencies. The right towels, sourced well, can last hundreds of wash cycles and contribute to a superior guest experience.

Composition: 100% Cotton vs Blends

Always specify 100% ring spun cotton for hotel towels. Blended towels (cotton-polyester) feel harsher and are less absorbent. Ring spun cotton is softer and more durable than open-end spun cotton, and the difference is immediately noticeable to guests.

Construction: Combed vs Carded

Combed cotton removes short fibres and impurities, resulting in a smoother, stronger yarn. Towels made from combed ring spun cotton are softer, more durable and less prone to pilling. Always request combed cotton for hotel-quality towels.

Double-Stitch Borders

The border (or hem) of a towel takes the most stress in laundry. Double-stitched or dobby-woven borders are significantly more durable than single-stitch hems. Always check the border construction when evaluating samples.

Testing and Certification

Ask your supplier for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, which confirms the product has been tested for harmful substances. For large orders, consider commissioning a pre-shipment inspection by SGS or Bureau Veritas to verify quality before goods leave the factory.

At SafatTex, all our hotel towels are manufactured from 100% combed ring spun cotton with double-stitched borders and OEKO-TEX certification available on request.
