GSM stands for grams per square metre — it measures how dense and heavy a towel is. A higher GSM means a heavier, thicker and more luxurious towel. A lower GSM means lighter, faster-drying and more economical.
What Do Different GSM Ranges Mean?
350–400 GSM: Lightweight towels that dry quickly. Ideal for beach resorts, gyms and budget properties where fast turnaround of laundry is important. Good cost-per-unit for large volumes.
450–550 GSM: The sweet spot for most hotels. Soft, absorbent and durable enough to withstand hundreds of wash cycles. This range is used by most 4-star and 5-star hotel chains worldwide.
600–700 GSM: Ultra-premium towels with a thick, plush feel. Used by luxury resorts, spas and high-end hospitality brands. Higher cost per unit but exceptional guest experience.
GSM and Laundry Considerations
Higher GSM towels take longer to dry in commercial laundry operations. If your property runs high-frequency laundry cycles, a 500–550 GSM towel often gives the best balance of luxury feel and operational efficiency. A 700 GSM towel may feel incredible but can create bottlenecks in busy laundry operations.
