MOQ for Hotel Towels: What Buyers Need to Know

Minimum order quantities are one of the first questions hotel buyers ask. This guide explains how MOQ works for hotel towels, how to negotiate it, and what to expect at different volume tiers.

MOQ for Hotel Towels: What Buyers Need to Know

Minimum order quantity — MOQ — is one of the first terms buyers encounter when sourcing hotel towels from a manufacturer. It refers to the smallest quantity a factory will produce in a single production run. Understanding why MOQs exist, how they vary, and how to work with them will help you plan your procurement more effectively and avoid surprises.

Why MOQs Exist

Every production run has fixed setup costs: loom calibration, yarn loading, dye lot preparation, and quality control sampling. These costs are the same whether a factory produces 100 towels or 10,000. The MOQ is essentially the point at which the fixed costs are spread across enough units to make the economics viable for the mill — and to give the buyer a reasonable per-unit cost.

A factory that accepts a 50-towel order would need to charge you the same per-unit cost as a 5,000-towel order just to cover setup. That is why small-volume requests from wholesale suppliers are often declined, or priced so high they become impractical.

Typical MOQ Ranges for Hotel Towels

MOQ varies significantly by factory size, product complexity and whether the towels are standard or custom. As a general guide: standard white hotel towels with no custom branding typically have MOQs of 500 to 1,000 pieces per size. Custom colour or custom yarn requires a minimum dye lot — usually 500 kg of yarn, which translates to roughly 1,000 to 2,000 towels depending on GSM. Custom woven label programmes add a label MOQ (typically 1,000 labels) on top of the product MOQ. Private label packaging (custom poly bag, individual box, hang tag) adds a packaging MOQ from the packaging supplier — usually 500 to 1,000 units.

Hotel Size and MOQ: Practical Planning

A 100-room hotel needs roughly 6 to 8 towels per room to maintain adequate par stock (allow for laundry cycles and replacement). That is 600 to 800 bath towels for a standard property — within MOQ range for most manufacturers. A 300-room hotel or a hotel group makes significantly more sense from an MOQ perspective and will typically command better pricing.

If you operate a smaller property or are ordering for the first time, consider ordering a mixed-size batch (bath towels + hand towels + face cloths) to meet the MOQ across multiple SKUs from a single production run. Most factories will accommodate this.

How to Negotiate MOQ

MOQ is not always fixed. There are several legitimate ways to negotiate: paying a setup fee to reduce the MOQ (the factory covers their fixed costs directly), committing to a repeat order schedule in writing, starting with standard white towels (no custom dye or label) which have the lowest MOQ, or splitting the MOQ across a product family rather than a single SKU.

Factories prefer buyers who demonstrate long-term intent over buyers who want to minimise a one-time order. If you can show that you are planning to reorder, most mills will be more flexible on the initial MOQ.

Sampling Before Full Production

Before committing to a full MOQ order, always request pre-production samples. A reputable manufacturer will produce 2 to 5 samples for approval at no charge (or a small sample fee credited against your first order). This lets you verify GSM, softness, colour accuracy and hem quality before committing to a full production run. Never skip the sampling stage regardless of how urgent your timeline is.
